In order to help current students and recent graduates to find their way in the working world, many of our alumni shared their career story. Here the story of Alberto Maria Mazza, External Communications and PR Project Manager at Pacifique in Geneva (CH). USI Degree: Master in Economia e Politiche internazionali, 2018.

How did you start your career?

During my Master’s studies, I did an internship at the United Nations in New York City for six months. The USI Career Scholarship for International Placement financially supported my experience in the US. Working for two different departments at the UN, IT and Economic and Social Affairs, helped me grow in an international working environment, gaining relevant technical knowledge on the dynamics of an international organization from an insider’s point of view. I also worked on the organization and planning of the 2017 United Nations Public Service Awards. This allowed me to develop my Master’s thesis regarding Sustainability and Drivers of Innovation in Public Administration.

Why did you choose a career at Pacifique?

I joined Pacifique during a period of unemployment following the restructuring of my previous company. At the same time, I enrolled in a professional photography school and began working as a freelance photographer, completing my first major project for Wella, my former employer. While participating in an unemployment program, I learned about Pacifique, a foundation that develops social, scientific, and artistic projects aboard sailing vessels. As sailing is a personal passion and I wanted to contribute to a project with tangible social impact, I applied to Pacifique. I now work there while continuing my freelance photography.

What is your current role/duties?

My role covers external communication, engagement with potential partners, press relations, and photographic and video coverage of the expeditions. This means that, occasionally, I go on a sailing boat to create visual content, a true dream that combines my skills with my personal interests.

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at Pacifique?

For me, the most important quality is passion. After all, Pacifique’s flagship is called Fleur de Passion for a reason. It is what allows you to do your job with energy, dedication, and influence. The impact of the work we do is important, but I believe the greatest contribution comes from the way you work, more than the sector itself. Deep and authentic interest, in any field, truly makes a difference.

What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?

USI allowed me to acquire theoretical and practical skills in economics and international policies, but above all, to develop a methodology: project management, teamwork, and problem-solving. These skills are extremely versatile, and I apply them every day, even in areas such as communication, marketing, and photography. I believe a degree is only a starting point: one should not limit oneself to their field of study, but be ready to follow their own inclinations while maintaining a solid methodology in their work.

What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?

Follow your passion, work hard and be open to new experiences. Life could surprise you.
