Here the story of Michela Pelosin, Research Assistant at Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano (CH). USI Degree: Master of Science in Cognitive Psychology in Health Communication, 2024.
How did you start your career?
After graduating, I joined MySpace Lab in Lausanne as a research assistant under the supervision of Professor Andrea Serino. This experience allowed me to explore academic research firsthand, work within multidisciplinary teams, and follow projects from concept to completion. After a year in consulting, I chose to return to academia and focus on research alongside clinical training in psychology.
Why did you choose a career at USI?
I am currently working at USI as a research assistant in Professor Schulz’s team. Alongside my psychotherapy training, I wanted to continue engaging with research, nurturing my curiosity, and contributing to projects within a stimulating academic environment.
What is your current role/duties?
I work as a research assistant, supporting different phases of research projects and contributing ideas for future developments and directions.
In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for a successful career at USI?
Curiosity, motivation, and attention to detail are essential.
A strong interest in research topics and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration are key to contributing to the growth and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
What positive aspects and qualities meant most to you during the study programme you attended?
The programme is highly stimulating and challenging, requiring strong commitment and mental flexibility. Its interdisciplinary nature fosters curiosity beyond traditional psychology curricula. Frequent group projects encourage teamwork skills within an intellectually enriching environment.
What competences and skills acquired in your USI Study Program have been useful/are useful to your professional career?
Key skills include rigorous study methodology, perseverance in completing complex tasks, strong critical thinking, effective communication of ideas, and the ability to work collaboratively by integrating diverse perspectives.
What is your advice to USI students entering the job market?
Follow what genuinely resonates with you and stay curious about new opportunities. There are many possible paths. By exploring your interests, you will discover the one that fits you best.
